Internet Software Consortium and APNIC Install First Root Nameservers in Taiwan and Singapore

Redwood City, CA, December 23, 2003 - Internet Software Consortium (ISC) has installed a new F-root server anycast instance in Taipei, Taiwan and another F-root server anycast in Singapore in cooperation with APNIC. The new servers are mirrors of the F-root nameserver managed by ISC in the United States.

Joao Damas, ISC Senior Programme Manager, said, "ISC is happy to deploy these two new F-root mirrors in collaboration with APNIC, contributing to the growth of the Internet in the Asia Pacific region. The mirror in Taipei, which has been installed also in collaboration with TWNIC will make Taiwan's Internet more robust against intercontinental link failures and improve response times for initial DNS searches significantly."

According to Paul Wilson, Director General of APNIC, "These deployments are the latest in our ongoing efforts to improve root services in this region, and bring the number of new servers we have supported in 2003 to five. These servers deliver substantial benefits directly to Internet Service Providers in Taipei, Singapore, and the surrounding areas; but they also have significant impact on the health of the entire Internet."

Damas added, "With the installation of the mirror in Singapore, ISC and APNIC are contributing to the increased resiliency and performance of the Internet in this important South East Asian economy."

The new server will store a series of information for identifying domain names that are included at the end of web addresses, for example '.' or '.com'. This enables it to find sites immediately in the region or to direct users to the other relevant servers located in other countries.
